Do you know Waynesboro, Virginia?
- Is named after General "Mad Anthony" Wayne (Jan. 1, 1745 – Dec. 15, 1796), Army officer and statesman from Chester, Pennsylvania. The many places named for him include Fort Wayne, Indiana.
- Is originally on Tees Tavern land.
- Becomes an unincorporated town 1801, incorporated town 1834, rechartered 1874 to allow annexation, independent city 1948.
- Waynesboro was a dry town. In 1889 Basic City was established as a wet town on the east side of the South River. In 1924 during Prohibition the 2 towns combined.
- On March 2, 1865 Confederate General Jubal Early loses the Battle of Waynesboro to Union Gen. George Custer. The street names preserve the Civil War history. The next day Charlottesville surrenders 25 miles to the east.
- Waynesboro has had a local urban renewal department since 1962.
- "Though candidates run to represent specific wards, the entire city votes in all races." Daily Progress confirms May 1, 2018 that Waynesboro has the At-Large Election of Numbered Posts, which D.O.J. disallowed for Tignall, Georgia.
- The citywide majority elect 4 city councilors from wards. PLUS the citywide majority elect a councilor for the at-large ward. One ward has 5 representatives...just like sister city Charlottesville. The 5 "mayors" appoint a city manager to serve as the at-large executive.
